Sources : Borbothis
Thomas of Cantimpré [circa 1200-1272 CE] (Liber de natura rerum, Fish 7.17): Borbothe, as they are commonly called in France, are river fish. They resemble eels: for they are slippery and can be skinned like an eel. But they have a black skin, and are a sweet food, and this especially the roe, which is the best and most delectable of all fish eggs. Its head is large in relation to its body, and its mouth is large and very broad. When it has passed twelve years of age, its body grows large; and then its name is changed and it is called solar, of which we shall speak below. Borbothe in French is called loin, or quappe (turbot) in Teutonic according to different dialects. - [Badke translation/paraphrase]
