Description
The Acerba, an Italian encyclopedia by Cecco d’Ascoli.
From the catalog description: This codex is rich in many curious and interesting figures, especially regarding the customs of the time. The first two folios are occupied by an index: the text begins on fol. 3, which has a painted outline. At the end of the poem is a large coat of arms consisting of a blue shield with a gold scale flanked by two stars. The shield is surmounted by a helmet whose crest is a crane holding a stone in its right foot, and around its neck is a fluttering postcard with the motto: Bono studio speza rea fortuna (A real fortune was spent on good work).
