The structure of the Ecbasis Captivi
Studia Neophilologica, Volume 47, Issue 1, 1975, page 3-6
Editors and readers have long tinkered with the text of an eleventh century beast epic, Ecbasis cuiusdam Captivi per Tropologiam, to remove an anomaly: the first line of the epilogue, which reads Versus milleni centeni septuageni, is usually numbered 1224. E. Voigt first suggested that lines 852-905 are an interpolation. By removing these fifty-four lines one restores to the first line of the epilogue its intended number, 1170. Although the most recent editors have printed lines 852-905 within square brackets, they disagree about their authenticity, E. H. Zeydel believes that Voigt 'had the correct answer', but Trillitzsch and Hoyer object. - [Author]
