Trillitzsch and Hoyer review the past scholarship and explain many obscurities of the poem which were passed over or unsatisfactorily treated by their predecessors. Trillitzsch worked on the philological-literary aspect, Hoyer on the historical side of the Ecbasis Captivi. Their book offers an introduction discussing the title, contents, poet, satiric aims, form, sources, manuscript tradition, and historical background of the verses. The Latin text is based upon the edition of Karl Strecker. A translation into German prose faces each page of Latin.
