One might be tempted to say, according to a well-worn formula, that the almost simultaneous publication of two editions of Ecbasis captivi, which had not seen one for thirty years, has brought attention back to this work, which is enigmatic in many respects. This would be to forget the work that has been continually devoted to it, and whose list can be found in the bibliography of our two editions. The edition by Trillitzsch and Hoyer also offers us an excellent overview of the current state of research, and both provide a translation whose timeliness cannot be overstated: firstly, because it accompanies a text that is difficult to read; Secondly, because unlike the commentator, who chooses the passages on which he deems it necessary to provide an explanation, the translator, for his part, undertakes to deliver to us, in a way, a perpetual commentary on which our own interpretations inevitably stumble, here and there... Hence the occasional nature of some of these notes: we ask the reader to please excuse us. - [Author]
