Description
The Miroir de l'humaine salvation is a French translation of the Speculum Humanae Salvationis, a theological text on the Christian story of the salvation of humanity by Christ. Its interest here is not so much for the text, but for the illustrations of the elephant, whale, ostrich, thamur and other animals found in most of the manuscripts containing this text.
The illustrations are very fine full color paintings, two per page, at the top of each page column.
This manuscript is paired with another copy of the Miroir de l'humaine salvation , Newberry Library, MS 40. It is thought that they were both produced around the same time, in the same scriptorium, but with different artists. The illustrations of both are very similar, though the style is different.Additional Descriptions
