Mandrake
People want mandrake root because it is valuable for medicine, but when a mandrake is pulled from the ground it produces a deadly scream that kills anyone who hears it. To safely get the mandrake, a hungry dog is tied to the root and meat is offered to it just out of reach. When the dog lunges for the meat, it pulls up the mandrake. As is common, the male and female mandrakes are shown as two humanoid figures with their heads in the ground.
