Le dragon dans le Physiologus. Portrait en creux d'un animal diabolique
École nationale des chartes , 2025
The present study aims to explore the symbolic evolutions of the dragon through the Greek Physiologus of the first recension and its Latin translations from families Y, A, B, C, and B-Is. Since the dragon does not have a notice specifically dedicated to it in the Greek Physiologus, it initially reveals itself only through the prism of other animals to which it is opposed, before gradually asserting itself in the later versions of the Latin Physiologus. Through the study of the different versions of the Physiologus, the reasons for this intermittent presence and the stakes of the dragon's progressive affirmation in the Latin versions emerge. Thus, the multiple facets of the dragon are unveiled through the analysis of the different natures of the animals it confronts. Finally, the organization of certain manuscripts contributes to exalting the diabolical nature of the dragon. - [Abstract]
