Fábula animal y tropología cristiana. Estudio literario de Ecbasis Captiui
University of Santiago de Compostela, 2022
This paper will undertake a philological study of Ecbasis captivi, that is, from a literary and cultural perspective. The work, written around the 11th century and of anonymous authorship, may have originated in the Vosges region of France. It is a narrative poem in dactylic leonine hexameter. First, we aim to situate the work within its historical and cultural context and attempt to place it within the broader spectrum of literary genres, as well as explore its connection to traditional and popular literature. Next, we will analyze the central theme of the narrative and describe the poem's narrative structure. Given the nature of the work, we will carefully examine the use of Christian tropology and the rhetorical devices employed in its composition. This analysis will reveal how the anonymous author employs satire, parody, and the development of biblical themes through the Greco-Roman device of the ancient fable featuring a series of animals. Each animal is chosen for its symbolic meaning, drawing on elements from both classical Greco-Roman and Christian traditions. - [Abstract]
