In a recent article entitled : « Politische und kirchliche Konflikte in Lotharin- gien und Burgund im Spiegel des latemischen Tierepos (10-11 Jahrhundert) », K.F. Werner puts forward a new understanding of Ecbasis, based on the identification of several of the protagonists of the poem : the Calf represents Bishop Brunon of Toul, the future Pope Leo DC ; the Wolf, Count Eudes II, Lord of Vermandois, Count of Blois and of Champagne (982-1037), the Fox, Foulque II Nerra, Count of Anjou (1040), the most resolute opponent of the former. The Lion does not represent a German monarch at all, but rather the king of western Franconie, the weak Robert the Pious (1031). The Count of Blois was defeated by Gozelon, Duke of Lower-Lorraine, near Nancy, on November 13th 1037, and was killed in the battle. The Ecbasis, written in the Spring of 1038, was the victory song of the Toulois, saved from danger by the defeat and death of then- enemy. This article examines the hypothesis of K.F. Werner, comparing it with that of H. Thomas who, already in 1964, had postulated authorship among the Trévires, in the last decade of the eleventh century. - [Abstract]
