El ciervo en los bestiarios medievales
Revista de Poética Medieval, Volume 37, Number , 2023, page 117-147
Knowledge of the deer dates back to ancient cultures, to which various beliefs have been associated. Beginning with the Greek treatise Pepys Library - Pepys MS 1916 - Description, the symbolism of this animal was linked to the struggle between good and evil. Gradually, the resulting animalistic texts, the bestiaries, focused on the image of the deer returning to the spring to rejuvenate itself as a symbol of baptism, representing entry into the new life offered by the Christian religion. This also contributed to its dissemination in learned literature, especially in poetry and didactic works. This work aims to trace the origins of deer symbolism, its evolution, and its use in selected literary texts. - [Abstract]
