From the 16th to the early 19th century, the story of Reynaert de vos was mainly known in a different version than what we consider the original 'Reynaert' today, written by a certain 'Willem'. The basic text was then an adaptation from the late 14th century, Reynaerts historie. This was one of the first bestsellers of the printed book. It laid the foundation for the rich Reynaert traditions in English and German.
