Description
The library began as a Jesuit college, and occupies that building. It became communal property in 1765 and its collections increased by way of books seized during the Revolution from religious establishments, including the abbey of Saint-Amand, convents of Valenciennes and surroundings (Saint-Saulve, Vicoigne, Hasnon) and from the Duke of Croy. It opened to the public in 1801.
