The identity of the testeum is unknown' it may be the sea turtle or a shelled molusc. The text says it becomes ill in salt water because it cannot release heat, but if it drinks fresh water for a while it recovers. How this image of a winged dragon-fish hybrid illustrates the description is a mystery.
