Description

A Book of Hours, in Latin and Norman French. It has 37 historiated intials, plus numerous line endings and drolleries. On folios 73 to 81 (part of the Office of the Dead), in the lower margin, there is a series of illustrations depicting the funeral of Reynard the Fox; 17 animals, all standing on their hind legs and some wearing clerical garb and/or playing musical instruments or carrying liturgical objects, accompany the supposedly dead Reynard on his funeral bier.

When the manuscript was rebound in the nineteenth century, the leaves were not assembled in their correct order. The corrected order (McCulloch, 1963) is: Hours of the Virgin; Abbreviated Hours; Hours of the Holy Ghost; Seven Penitential Psalms, Litany and Collects; Fifteen Gradual or Penitential Psalms; Office of the Dead; Hours of the Passion or of Jesus Crucified; Prayers; Lections in the life of Saint Catherine.
