Description
The Zwettl Cistercian monastery was created in 1138 by Hademar I. It is in the center of the forest near the city of Zwettl. The monastery church was built in 1159. From the beginning the Scriptorium of the monastery was of great importance, which provided for the rapid increase of the book inventory. The monastery was destroyed in 1427, but was rebuilt, and around around 1490 the magnificent gothic church was finished. Extensive construction occurred in the eighteenth century, when the library was built.
