About this Text

This text is a commentary on some of the early print (16th century or later) editions of the De bestiis et aliis rebus (On beasts and other things), incorrectly attributed to Hugh of St Victor. The De bestiis is in four books: Book I is the De avibus, a moralized text on birds by Hugh of Fouilloy; Books II and III are versions of the Latin Physiologus; Book IV is an alphabetic dictionary of Latin terms, many relating to animals.

The extract is taken from a larger work with the title Les Oeuvres de Hugues de Saint-Victor published in 1886 in Paris. The full text is available from the Internet Archive (see Source above). This edition was derived from the OCR text of the original book, and was reformatted with errors corrected. The original French text was not modified. It is followed by an English translation produced by Google Translate, which was edited to correct errors.
