About this Text

This Greek version of the Physiologus was attributed to Saint Epiphanius (ca. 310-403 CE), Bishop of Constantia in Cyprus. It is unlikely that Epiphanius was the author of this text or had anything to do with it; several other Greek writers have also been called the author of the Physiologus. This edition, with a Latin translation of the Greek text, is taken from the Patrologia Cursus Completus, Series Graeca by Jacques-Paul Migne, which has the Greek and Latin text in alternating columns. Only the Latin text is reproduced here in the "full" and "plain text" edition; for the Greek text see the "Migne page images" file. This translation is identical to that published in Antwerp in 1588, an edition edited by Consalus Ponce de Leon. There are some significant difference between this version of the Physiologus and the "standard" version.
