According to the Encyclopedia of Superstitions (I believe it was the one by Edwin and Mona Radford, but there are several books with the same name) it was believed in some parts of England that whoever stole an eagle stone out of the nest would be cursed and never able to rest for all their life.
Dear Beastmaster,
Many thanks for this wonderful blog. I'm about to offer a course on medieval tales of wonder and this blog together with bestiary.ca have been invaluable. Students will love it. I'm relieved to know too that "there was general confusion between dragons and other serpents" since I've had trouble with this one myself.
Yours-sspp sincerely,
