Among the most exquisite results of that literary translation of the frescoes of Herculaneum and Pompeii, in the graphic arts department of the Louvre we find an album of engravings painted in gouache, and entitled Peintures d'Herculanum, from which we have taken a selection of decorative illustrations featuring real and imaginary beasts.
