It was assumed from the outset that the Physiologus, the popular book beloved in all Christian literature, would also have been present in Coptic literature. The first trace of its existence was found by Hommel, who pointed out in his edition of the Ethiopian Physiologus that the Scala of Samannûdi was the "unicorn", a word that belongs to the Physiologus literature...
