Sources : Falena
Thomas of Cantimpré [circa 1200-1272 CE] (Liber de natura rerum, Quadrupeds 4.41): The falena is an animal originating in remote parts of the world, having been created for the purpose of vengeance and retribution upon proud humans. For this animal has a certain natural indignation for the pride of humans curses them and, if it sees the opportunity to join in battle, it strongly pursues a fight and as the victor over pride severely strives to harm the man. On the contrary, if it detects an indication of humility, by the sign of flight and fear, in a man it runs into, it sometimes stops and allows that man to escape. - [Badke translation/paraphrase]
