The gudgeon is found in some medieval encyclopedias. It is a small fish that feeds in waters with sand and pebble bottoms. It is sometimes corrupted by ugly white worms in it belly.
Reality
In modern taxonomy, the gudgeon is in the genus Gobio, part of subfamily Gobioninae. It moves in shoals over sandy and gravelly bottoms.
