General Attributes
The ptarmigan (lagopus) is found in some medieval encyclopedias. It is said have tufts of feathers on its feet that resemble the tufts of fur on the feet of hares. It gets gets its name "hare-foot" from the Greek name (lagos = hare + pous = foot).
Reality
The lagopus is probably the Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus), found in northern Europe and Scotland and the Alps.
