General Attributes
The mullet was known under several names. Most sources use the names Red Mullet (mullus) or Grey Mullet (mugilis), though many do not distinguish between them.
The mullet is a fish found in the Mediterranean Sea. It is said to be very agile. The mullet was an important source of food in Mediterranean Europe since at least Roman times. This fish is found in encyclopedias but not usually in bestiaries, though it appears in at least one, Cambridge University Library, Kk.4.25 (folio 90v).
Uses Magical, Medical, Alchemical and Culinary
Red mullet when eaten dulls the eyes and inhibits desire. If a mullet is killed in wine, people who drink it develop a distaste for wine.
