The wasp is found in some medieval encyclopedias. It is an insect that stings. It builds its nest out of mud in high places. It makes combs of wax, but they are useless because they are not produced from flowers. It is born from the rotting flesh of horses.
There is considerable overlap in the descriptions of the wasp and the hornet.
