The centipede is found in some medieval encyclopedias. It is a worm (or serpent) with many feet (literally 100 feet). If it is cut into pieces, each piece will live live for some time, though separated from the others.
One of the names of the centipede, multipes (many foot), is also used for the octopus and the millipede.
