The Bongarsiana collection contains the books which the French scholar and diplomat Jacques Bongars (1554-1612) collected, many of them from French monasteries during the Huguenot wars. In 1632 his heir Jakob Graviseth (1598-1658) gave Bongars' book collection to the Bern library. The Bongarsiana contains today over 1000 manuscripts, among them 650 medieval codices and 360 newer European manuscripts, 50 Eastern, 40 Greek and 25 Hebrew manuscripts. |
