This Web site uses several images as symbols or icons to provide information or to serve as clickable buttons. The symbols shown below can appear on various pages; symbols that appear only on a specific type of page are described in the help for that page.

Toolbar Buttons

The symbols below are used as buttons in the "toolbars" found at the top and bottom of most pages, and as a vertical bar on some pages. If a symbol in the toolbar is grey instead of green, it means the function it performs is not applicable to that page.

Help: Clicking this button takes you to the start of these help pages - the Help Contents page. From there you can go to specific help pages (like this one).

Contents: Clicking this button takes you to the site contents (or "site map") page, from where you can go directly to the start page of any of the main sections of this site.

Index: Clicking this button will take you back to the main introduction and index page for the area of the site you are currently viewing.

Search: Clicking this button will take you to the site search page, from where you can search the entire site for specific words and phrases.

Information Icons and Links

The symbols below are used to provide information or as clickable links. If the symbol is clickable, hovering the mouse over it will cause it to "light up".

Copyright: Indcates that the text or image is copyright. Hover the mouse cursor over the symbol to see a brief copyright statement; click the symbol to go to the copyright page (in a new window) for the item, which provides full copyright details. The copyright window can be left open; it will be re-used the next time you click a copyright symbol.

Bibliographic reference: Indicates that there is detailed bibliographic information available. Except for when it appears in a bibliography list, hovering the mouse cursor over the symbol will show a brief bibliographic citation. In all cases, clicking on the symbol will take you to the complete bibliographic details (in a new window). The bibliographic details window can be left open; it will be re-used the next time you click a bibliography symbol.

Electronic/digital text bibliographic reference: Same as the "Bibliographic reference" symbol above, but indicates that the item is available in digital form. The URL of the digital item will normally be provided.

Manuscript reference: Indicates a reference to a description of a manuscript. Click the symbol to jump to the manuscript description page.

Adobe Acrobat (PDF) document: The document is in Portable Document Format (PDF). You will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software to view it. If you want to download the document instead of viewing it online, right-click on the link and select "Save target as" (Internet Explorer) or "Save link as" (Netscape Navigator).

Email link: This symbol indicates that an email address is available. The address has been encoded to discourage spammers. If you hover the mouse cursor over the symbol, you will see the decoded email address. If you click the symbol, your email program should launch, with the decoded email address filled in for you.
